Wellness Exam for Kittens

Gentle early care to help your kitten grow healthy and confident.

Bringing home a new kitten is exciting, sweet, and sometimes a little overwhelming. You may be wondering when they need vaccines, what food is best, whether their behavior is normal, or how to keep them healthy as they grow.

Your kitten’s first vet visit is a chance to make sure they’re healthy, start their preventative care, and get answers to all those early questions.

At  Greater Saint John Veterinary Wellness & Urgent Care, we make first kitten visits calm, gentle, and helpful for both kittens and their families. Our team will walk you through what your kitten needs now, what to expect over the next few months, and how to give them the best possible start.

What Happens During a Kitten’s First Vet Visit?

During your kitten’s first appointment, our team will perform a full physical exam to check their eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, skin, coat, belly, and overall growth.

We’ll also talk about your kitten’s vaccine schedule, parasite prevention, deworming, nutrition, litter box habits, and any questions you have about behavior at home. This visit is also a good time to discuss spaying or neutering, microchipping, and what future wellness care may look like.

If you received records from a breeder, rescue, shelter, or previous clinic, we’ll review those, too, so we can build the right plan for your kitten.

Kitten Vaccinations

Kittens need a series of vaccines during their first few months of life because their immune systems are still developing. These vaccines help protect them from serious contagious diseases.

Your kitten’s vaccine plan may depend on their age, previous vaccine history, lifestyle, and whether they will live strictly indoors or may have outdoor exposure. We’ll explain which vaccines are recommended, when boosters are due, and how to keep your kitten protected as they grow.

Parasite Prevention and Deworming

Many kittens are born with or exposed to intestinal parasites early in life, even when they look healthy. That’s why deworming and fecal testing are often part of early kitten care.

We may recommend parasite screening, deworming, and flea prevention based on your kitten’s age, health, and risk level. If you have other pets at home, we’ll also talk through how to reduce the risk of parasites spreading between animals.

Nutrition, Growth, and Home Care

Kittens grow quickly, and proper nutrition plays a big role in their development. During the visit, we can talk about what to feed, how often to feed, portion sizes, and how to transition foods safely if needed.

We’re also happy to discuss everyday kitten care, including litter box setup, scratching behavior, socialization, introducing your kitten to other pets, safe play, and how to make your home kitten-friendly.

Planning for Spay or Neuter, Microchipping, and Future Care

Your kitten’s first vet visit helps set the foundation for long-term care. As your kitten grows, we’ll help you plan important next steps such as spaying or neutering surgery, microchipping, booster vaccines, and routine wellness exams.

You don’t need to figure everything out at once. We’ll guide you step by step and help you understand what matters now and what can wait until your kitten is a little older.
